A few days ago, all classes of the HEOP/AOP program received a memo citing Governor (NY) George Pataki's proposed budget cuts for the 2003 fiscal year. The re-elected Governor is working on a plan to do away with almost $11 million dollars in scholarship funds effecting educational institutions across the state. Such a "tax cut" would seriously jepordize the opportunity for first generation college students coming from working class homes to afford a higher education (mission of programs like HEOP/AOP). In reaction, the memo suggested that HEOP/AOP students lobby at the state capitol to show both our awareness and opposition.
