11/12/2002 Archived Entry: "Election Day"

Just wanted to let you all know that my cousin, David Owens, lost his
re-election bid yesterday. He was running for SC House seat 119. I
spent the day (and night) in Dorchester County as a poll observer, a job
from hell. I was stuck out in Givhans, a place that Flannery O'Connor
would have found ripe with story ideas. To give you an idea, there were
"save Jesus" signs all over the place, a tent revival going on next to
the polling place, a one-eyed criminal trying to help people vote in the
booth, and a election commissioner in a body brace telling me to shut up.
Oh, it was an eventful day! We were crushed for David, but he's really
positive about it all and feels that there must be another calling for
him in life.
